JEE Main study guide

India's main engineering entrance exam. It tests speed, accuracy, and the ability to apply concepts under a strict time limit.

Country
India
Language
English and Hindi
Subjects
Physics · Chemistry · Mathematics
Format
Computer-based test with multiple-choice and numerical-value questions. Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech; Paper 2 is for B.Arch/B.Planning.
Duration
Three hours per paper
Scoring
Subject scores are converted to percentiles and an All India Rank. Admission also depends on the counselling process.

Practical JEE Main Study Guide

NTA Engineering Entrance Tactics

Subjects & Pattern Breakdown

Physics (25 Q, 100 marks): Mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, wave optics, modern physics, and experimental skills.

Chemistry (25 Q, 100 marks): Physical Chemistry (chemical kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics), Inorganic Chemistry (coordination compounds, periodic trends, chemical bonding), and Organic Chemistry (reaction mechanisms, name reactions, biomolecules).

Mathematics (25 Q, 100 marks): Calculus, coordinate geometry (conics & circles), matrices & determinants, complex numbers, vectors, and 3D geometry.

Pattern: 20 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and 10 Numerical Value Questions (attempt any 5) per subject, totaling 75 questions (300 marks in 3 hours).

Timed Problem Sets & Formula Spaced Repetition (1h30/day)

JEE Main rewards rapid analytical accuracy under intense time constraints.

Dedicate 1h30 daily using spaced repetition (SRS) to memorize physics formulas, inorganic exceptions, and organic reaction mechanisms. Take weekly computer-based mock exams to calibrate your timing.

Negative Marking Control (+4/-1) & Section Ordering

Tactical Negative Marking (+4/-1): Every wrong answer deducts 1 mark. Avoid blind guessing. In numerical value questions, select only questions with clean, integer calculations.

NCERT Textbooks for Chemistry: Over 85% of inorganic chemistry questions are drawn directly from NCERT textbook tables and lines. Treat NCERT Chemistry as essential.

Time Budget Allocation: Finish Chemistry first in 40–45 minutes, solve Physics in 50–55 minutes, and preserve 75–80 minutes for calculation-heavy Mathematics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Key answers for JEE Main aspirants
What is the marking scheme for JEE Main?
JEE Main awards +4 marks for every correct answer and deducts -1 mark for each incorrect response across both multiple-choice and numerical-value questions. Unanswered questions receive 0 marks.
How does the NTA calculate percentiles across multiple shifts?
Because JEE Main is administered over multiple days and sessions with varying difficulty, the National Testing Agency (NTA) normalizes raw scores into a Percentile Score (from 0 to 100) reflecting relative rank within that specific shift.
How does JEE Main differ from JEE Advanced?
JEE Main determines admission to NITs, IIITs, and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes, and serves as the screening qualifier for the top ~250,000 candidates eligible to sit for JEE Advanced (the sole admission exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology, IITs).
Which topics carry the highest weightage in JEE Main Mathematics?
Coordinate Geometry (circles and conics), Definite Integrals and Area Under Curves, Matrices and Determinants, and Vectors & 3D Geometry consistently yield the highest question concentration.
